Initiatives focused on fueling academic excellence across the university continue our 150-plus year history of innovation in teaching and learning.
Support the development of new programs, hands-on learning opportunities, student-faculty research and community-based engagement and learning.
The NEW Academic Commons
Housing the Writing Center, Mathematics Tutoring, general tutoring services, and flex space for support like “pop-up” career services and undergraduate research, this newly envisioned and highly visible space in Cook Library brings student support services together in one location and sets the tone for the exciting and collaborative work that will take place there.
The Democracy Today Project
A project that provides opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration and the education of “citizens” who are knowledgeable, appreciate and practice critical thinking/scientific processes and engage in their communities, supporting this endeavor will continue to position Towson University and the College of Liberal Arts as intellectual leaders.
- Democracy Today Commemorative Events Series Led by a faculty planning committee, with a focus on interactive college and university-wide student and community experiences, celebrations and commemorations will honor the people and events who have advanced and sustained a civil society and promoted equity and self-determination in diverse communities.
- The Democracy Today Fund As an intellectual leader, Towson University and the College of Liberal Arts is preparing citizen-leaders for life. Your support of the Democracy Today Fund will provide the resources needed to bring thought-leaders to campus, fund programming, support student research and community engagement, provide supplementary funding for faculty research and build on the promise that every student has the opportunity to make a difference.
Funding this digital media laboratory will allow students opportunities to practice creating professional-level, multimodal works including writing, video, interactive presentations, app and website development and explore cutting-edge new media.
Virtuality/Augmented Reality Lab
This laboratory will be used for instruction, homework, faculty development of pedagogical materials and faculty research. A college-shared space, support for this lab will fulfill students’ expectations for interacting with our world and technology upgrades for faculty.
Computer Lab Space Expansion and Enhanced Technology
The addition of more computer workstations and labs will allow TU students to study and learn in a way that reflects the evolution of technology. Funding upgraded software and hardware/computer workstations, collaborative study spaces and anticipated technology break-throughs will ensure our graduates enter the world, fluent in current and evolving technology.
A nationally acclaimed, award-winning publication, produced exclusively by TU undergraduates, earned its 18th consecutive award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Funding is important to continue the production of Grub Street and the noteworthy opportunity it presents for TU English students as a distinguishing part of their undergraduate experience.
Certified Financial Planning (CFP) Center
The development of a CFP Center will provide our students with the preparation and hands-on skill development needed for the Principles of Certified Financial Planning course. Providing financial scenarios, working with client portfolios and establishing financial goals are just some of the real-world challenges our students can anticipate.
The Sales Center provides solid grounding in the principles of selling, exposure to the latest sales theories and research, and opportunities for hands-on sales skills development. Dedicated lab space, classroom space and exposure to the latest software and leading-edge technology all ensure that our students graduate prepared to lead in business and beyond.
Student Certification and Credentialing
Ensuring that our students are prepared to enter the workforce, equipped and market-ready with Microsoft and Bloomberg certifications, is critical to their success as new graduates. Funding to underwrite the cost of the certification is an excellent way for donors to support our students and prepare them for professional success.
Expanding opportunities for students to learn and grow in the midst of friendly competition is the goal of the CBE student competitions. Donor support ensures that these events continue to expand with new and exciting challenges and topics.
- Data Analytics Competition: Students crunch data and create visualizations for the chance to win scholarship prize money.

- Future plans include a Financial Planning Competition with sponsorship opportunities for businesses/corporations to review top student talent.
Computer Science (CS) and Computational Thinking (CT)
Your support will position TU as the leader in the preparation of teachers for grades K-8. Our goal is to advance teacher education preparation by creating a credential-based smart learning environment using advanced and immersive technologies.
Diverse Teacher Workforce Development
You can help bring life to educational experiences that encourage and welcome diverse thinking and life experiences. By creating and implementing programs to help encourage greater diversity in educators, we help to ensure that every student touched by a TU-educated teacher, thrives and appreciates their value in society.
TU Cyber Center for Education and Innovation
As an NSA/DHS National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations and one of the first four institutions in the world to receive ABET accreditation in Cybersecurity, Towson University is emerging as a global leader. Support for the Center positions TU to pursue solutions for today’s and tomorrow’s cyber challenges, encourages innovative research and discovery, develops solutions to the cyber workforce crisis, and engages in opportunities for technology commercialization.
Actuarial Science & Risk Management
TU is designated by the Society of Actuaries as one of only 17 Centers of Actuarial Excellence in the United States, and only 33 worldwide. TU offers both the undergraduate ASRM concentration as well as a new Master of Science degree in Actuarial Science and Predictive Analytics. Gifts supporting students in these programs may be directed to the Dr. Ohoe Kim ASRM Scholarship, or the Dr. Ohoe Kim ASRM Award & Scholarship Endowment.
Special Collections Expansion Project
TU’s Special Collections & University Archives has outgrown its current space. An expansion and move to the lower level of the Library will provide additional space, offer a special preservation area and allow for additional special collections in need of preservation.
Diversity in Academic Literature Fund
When students see their identities reflected in the books they read, it can spark their love of learning. With support, TU’s research resources will reflect our diversity so that all students, both at TU and those taught by a TU-trained teacher, can see themselves represented in what they are learning.
MakerSpace/MakerSpace to Go
Support will enable the library to lend students maker kits they can use to create and build. These kits include materials like 3D printing pens, tool kits, sewing kits, and electronics kits such as Arduinos, Raspberry Pi, and TI LaunchPads, and more.
Children’s Literature Lab
This space will offer current and future teachers the opportunity to create and practice lesson plans that incorporate materials from our exemplar children’s collection. The lab will be enhanced with a Family Study Space, a dedicated area for TU students with children where they can study and have access to our collection. Because children’s literature continues to evolve, a Youth Literature Speaker Series will enable the TU community to stay on the cutting edge of publishing in this genre by hearing from new authors who can provide inspiration for how to incorporate their works into the curriculum.
Digital Scholarship Center: An expansion of existing Data Studio
Transforming the Data Studio into a Digital Scholarship Center will integrate data and mapping into both teaching and research, as well as provide opportunities to learn best practices in digitization, data visualization, and offer access to virtual/augmented reality stations, equipping our graduates to obtain jobs using 21st century skills.
Virtual Learning and Streaming Media
Present day e-learning and a greater reliance on visual media in today’s curricula mean online resources are more important than ever for our students. Support for these educational needs transcends the pandemic.
High Impact Education
High-impact education includes undergraduate and graduate research and experiential learning opportunities. A cornerstone of effective student healthcare preparation, Interprofessional Education (IPE) provides students with exposure to a healthcare team environment, facilitates future team-based care and allows students to learn and work together. Donor support for research opportunities and the Summer Undergraduate Research Institute encourages students to apply investigative methods and experimentation and supports faculty-student collaboration to address immediate patient needs, define new procedures and tools that improve care and open new pathways for career opportunities and advanced education.
Towson University was the first Maryland higher education institution invited to adopt the UTeach program, which today includes 46 universities in 22 states and Washington, D.C.
