As a member of the RISE Campaign Committee, and “part of the TU Athletics family,” CSM (Ret.) Tom Beyard ’77 takes his volunteer commitment seriously.  After making a generous gift to TU Athletics in 2020, Tom began thinking about what comes next.

He started by identifying friends and alumni of TU, many of whom were either current or retired members of the Maryland Army National Guard. “I don’t ask anyone to do anything that I either haven’t done or wouldn’t do myself,” says Tom.

He first approached Sean Casey ’87, with whom he served in the Maryland National Guard. Sean is now retired and a TU Athletics season ticket holder. The two had lunch and by the time lunch ended, the idea of a TU Football scholarship was picking up steam. The momentum continued when Sean contacted Brian Feser ’89, Retired Active Duty Army with service in the Maryland National Guard, to talk about working together to establish the scholarship.

With the help of Tim Leonard, Dir. of Athletics and Dan Crowley, Sr. Assoc. Dir. of Athletics and Chief Development Officer, soon the name and funding details were decided and the BG (Ret) Sean Casey ‘87 and LTC (Ret) Brian Feser ‘89 Endowed Football Scholarship became a reality. In addition to their generous gifts to establish the endowed scholarship, Casey and Feser provided additional funding so that scholarships could be awarded and student-athletes could benefit immediately. “Private support to student-athlete scholarships is a key component to our success,” says Crowley. “We are incredibly thankful and humbled by the dedication and leadership from Sean and Brian.”
